Pattaya Neighborhood & Area Guide

Find the right Pattaya area for your trip. Compare Central Pattaya nightlife, calm Wong Amat resorts, upscale Pratumnak, Jomtien, and Naklua.

Find the right Pattaya area for your trip. Compare Central Pattaya nightlife, calm Wong Amat resorts, upscale Pratumnak, Jomtien, and Naklua.

Naklua

The original Pattaya. Means: Salt fields. North. calm, mostly Thai, some Russians. fish market, Sanctuary of Truth, Wong Amat Beach, seafood places. No go-go bars, almost no tourist-traps.

Good for quiet mornings, beach swims, and a 10-minute baht bus ride to the chaos.

Wong Amat

Technically part of Naklua but worth its own callout because the hotel options are completely different. Wong Amat is the western side of the Naklua headland. The water is the cleanest within mainland Pattaya, the beach is the widest, and the high-rises form a kind of architectural wall that fools people into thinking it's a private beach. Under Thai law it's not. Walk in through Soi Naklua 16 or 18 and the whole strip is yours.

Good for 5-star resort, pool, sea view, and zero Walking Street energy.

Central Pattaya

The engine room. This is where the action is. The sweet spot is the corridor between Soi Buakhao and 3rd Road, where my favorite Hotel sits. Five minutes to the action, two minutes to a quiet pool.

Pratumnak Hill

Between Central Pattaya and Jomtien. Big Buddha temple, Pattaya City Sign, Khao Pattaya Viewpoint, Royal Cliff resort complex, Cozy Beach, villas and pool condos.

Vibe: upscale, peaceful, and almost suburban. No nightlife. Restaurants are spread out. You need a scooter or a Grab.

South Pattaya

Area around South Pattaya Road, Thepprasit night market zone. Technically part of Central, but more mid-range Thai hotels, more long-stay expats, and the biggest 7-Eleven ever.

Stay here if you've been to Pattaya before, you want the convenience of Central without the noise of Beach Road, and you're happy with a 10-minute baht bus to the action.

Jomtien

Six kilometers of beach south of Pratumnak. The water is cleaner than central Pattaya Bay.

Jomtien is LGBTQ+, especially around Dongtan Beach. Big condo towers, lots of long-stay foreigners, several Night Markets and seafood restaurants.

Note: the first half Jomtien is Russian, there are Russian signs everywhere. Remember the nickname? Jomtienski.... The second half is thai again. But there’s also Villa Germania… And Thailand’s first brothel hotel. Yes, you heard right: a hotel resort with a gentlemens club on site, next to the pool. Amazing Thailand.

The Dark Side

East of Sukhumvit Road, yes the same sukhumvit road that starts in Bangkok near Nana Plaza. The Dark Side has been without electricity for years, the nights were dark. That’s the nickname. Cheap rents, long-term western expats, almost zero tourists. Mabprachan Lake , villas and golf courses.

Stay here if: you're scouting for retirement, looking at long-term rentals, you play golf.
