Scam Prevention

The uncomfortable truth: Thailand has scams targeting tourists. But with this guide, you'll avoid ALL of them. I've seen these scams firsthand. Here's how to protect yourself.

CRITICAL: READ THIS BEFORE BOOKING ANYTHING

Before you visit ANY sightseeing spot, book ANY activity, or accept ANY offer:

Paste the spot or scenario → Know if it's legit in seconds. Most scams are preventable. Knowledge is your best defense.

Examples:

• "Is this tour price fair? [paste link/photo]"
• "Someone offered me X, is this a scam?"
• "What should I do if a taxi driver won't use meter?"
• "I think I got scammed, what do I do?"

Scam Protection Protocol

Document everything—names, faces, locations, times, and receipt photos.
Call the Tourist Police at 1155 for English-speaking assistance. Local police at 191 may not understand tourist issues.
Get a copy of the official report ("Bor Tor Ror" ) for insurance claims.
Learn key phrases: "Mai ao krap" (I don’t want), "Phŏm bị lûuk lǐeow" (I've been scammed), "Tôi tam rûp săm-nùn" (I want to report a problem).
The phrase "Tourist Police" often stops scammers immediately.
Tell your hotel what happened. Good properties know problematic businesses and may intervene to protect their reputation.
And have insurance

SCAM RISK BY AREA

High Risk Areas:

• 🔴 Bangkok Grand Palace area (temple closed scam, tuk-tuk scam)
• 🔴 Bangkok Khao San Road (overpricing, fake tickets)
• 🔴 Patong Beach, Phuket (jet ski, massage upsells, ping pong shows)
• 🔴 Pattaya Beach (jet ski, general tourist traps)
• 🔴 Suvarnabhumi Airport (taxi scams)

Medium Risk Areas:

• 🟡 Sukhumvit (taxi, red light)
• 🟡 Silom (ping pong shows)
• 🟡 Chatuchak Market (overpricing, but expected)
• 🟡 Islands (overpriced tours)

Low Risk Areas:

• 🟢 Chiang Mai (generally honest, fewer scams)
• 🟢 Malls and department stores (safe, fixed prices)
• 🟢 Chain hotels (safe)
• 🟢 Airports (inside)

SCAM CHECKLIST

Before any purchase/booking:

☐ Is the price online similar?
☐ Does the seller have good reviews?
☐ Am I being pressured to decide now?
☐ Is this offer too good to be true?
☐ Did I check with the AI tool?

If YES to questions 3 or 4, or NO to 1-2 & 5: → DON'T DO IT

Remember:
95% of Thai people are honest and friendly. These scams exist, but they're avoidable with awareness.
Don't let fear of scams stop you from enjoying Thailand. Just be smart, use this guide, and you'll be fine.

GENERAL SCAM PREVENTION RULES

The "Too Good to Be True" Rule:
If offer seems impossibly cheap → It's a scam
The "Unsolicited Help" Rule:
If stranger offers help you didn't ask for → Be very cautious
The "Shop Detour" Rule:
If transportation includes "quick stop at shop" → Say no
The "Pressure" Rule:
If someone pressures you to decide NOW → Walk away
The "Free Gift" Rule:
Nothing is free in tourist areas → Decline all "gifts"

THE 15 MOST COMMON SCAMS

I explain each scam:

1️⃣ THE "TEMPLE CLOSED TODAY" SCAM
How it works:You're at the Grand Palace in Bangkok or a major temple. Random local man says:

• "Oh sorry, temple closed today for ceremony"
• "But I know another beautiful temple, very special"
• "Also, let me take you to this gem shop, very good prices"
• He takes you to:
• A random temple (usually boring)
• A gem shop where he gets commission
• Maybe a tailor shop
• Why it works:
• You're new, don't know the temple/palace schedule
• Local seems friendly and helpful
• You think you're getting insider knowledge
• The truth:
• Grand Palace/major temples are RARELY closed
• If actually closed, it's announced weeks ahead
• The "special temple" is nothing special
• The gem shop is a massive scam (see Scam #5)
• How to avoid:
• ✅ Check temple hours online before going (Grand Palace: 8:30am-3:30pm daily)
• ✅ If scammer says closed, check on your phone RIGHT THEN
• ✅ Tell scammer you'll check at the entrance yourself
• If it happens:
• Film everything
• Say that you will call the tourist police
• Call the tourist police
• Post video on social media to warn others
• Real cost:
• $50-200 if you fall for the gem shop + wasted time
• Likelihood:
• 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨 Very common, especially near Grand Palace area

2️⃣ TUK-TUK "COMMISSION TOUR" SCAM
How it works:Tuk-tuk driver offers amazing deal:

• "I take you all around Bangkok, 3 hours, only ฿100!"
• (Normal price would be ฿1,000+)
• Sounds great! But then:
• He takes you to tailor shop ("just 5 minutes")
• Then gem shop
• Then another shop
• Then another
• Your "3-hour tour" is 2.5 hours in shops
• Why it works:
• Price seems too good to be true (it is!)
• You think you're getting a deal
• You feel obligated to go in shops since it's so cheap
• The truth:
• Driver gets ฿200-500 commission from EACH shop you enter (whether you buy or not)
• That's why the tour is cheap - shops pay him
• You waste your day in tourist trap shops
• How to avoid:
• ✅ If price seems impossibly low, it's a scam
• ✅ Ask directly: "Do we go to any shops?" - If "yes" or sketchy answer, walk away
• ✅ Use Grab/Bolt for point-to-point rides
• ✅ For tours, book online through reputable companies
• If it happens:
• After first shop, tell driver you're done with the tour
• Pay him ฿100-200 and find your own way
• Don't feel guilty—this is his scam
• Real cost:
• Wasted time (half day) + potential purchases at inflated prices
• Likelihood:
• 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨 Extremely common around tourist areas

3️⃣ JET SKI DAMAGE SCAM
How it works: You rent a jet ski at the beach:

• Operator doesn't show you existing damage
• You ride jet ski (maybe 15 mins)
• You return it
• Operator "discovers" damage: "You broke it! Pay ฿50,000!"
• His "friends" (enforcers) surround you
• You pay thousands to "settle.”
• Why it works:
• You're scared, outnumbered
• You don't have proof of pre-existing damage
• They threaten police (they're in on it)
• You just want to leave
• The truth:
• Damage was there before (or they did it)
• "Repair cost" is fake (10x actual price)
• Happens in Pattaya, Phuket (Patong Beach especially)
• How to avoid:
• ✅ DON'T RENT JET SKIS in Phuket/Pattaya (seriously, just don't)
• ✅ If you must: Take VIDEO of jet ski from all angles before riding
• ✅ Show the video to operator: "Confirming no damage"
• ✅ Ride with them watching
• ✅ If they claim damage, show your video
• ✅ Have hotel phone number ready, call them if threatened
• If it happens:
• DON'T PAY immediately
• Show your before-video
• Call your hotel/embassy
• Call tourist police: 1155
• Negotiate down to ฿5,000-10,000 maximum if there is no way out
• File police report after (though rarely helps)
• Real cost:
• ฿20,000-50,000 ($580-1,450) if you fall for it
• Likelihood:
• 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨 Very common on Phuket beaches

4️⃣ TAXI NO METER SCAM

• How it works: You get in a taxi. Ask "Meter?" Driver says:
• "Meter broken, I give you good price"
• "Where you go? Okay ฿500" (should be ฿150)
• Or: Meter is "on" but runs crazy fast (rigged)
• Why it works:
• You're tired and just want to get to hotel
• You don't know fair prices
• You think negotiating is normal
• The truth:
• The meter is NOT broken (it's Thailand; everything works)
• Flat rate is always inflated 3-5x
• Legal taxis MUST use meter
• Rigged meters exist but are rare now
• How to avoid:
• ✅ Use Bolt/Grab app (shows price upfront)
• ✅ At Suvarnabhumi: Use the Airport Rail Link. After midnight: Use official taxi stand and insist on meter
• ✅ On street: Before getting in, point to the meter and say, "Meter, yes?"
• ✅ If driver says no meter, walk away and get another
• ✅ If driver resists, literally say "Meter or I leave.”
• Fair prices (by meter):
• Airport → Sukhumvit: ฿300-400
• Short ride (5 km): ฿80-120
• Across town (15 km): ฿150-250
• If it happens:
• If already in a taxi and the driver refuses meter:
  • Tell him to stop
  • Pay ฿50-100 for distance traveled
  • Get out and find another taxi
• Don't argue long; just leave
• Real cost:
• Overpay ฿200-400 ($6-12) per ride
• Likelihood:
• 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨 Common at airports, tourist areas
• 💡 TIM'S TIP: Just trains, boats, Bolt/Grab. Solves this entire problem.

5️⃣ GEM SHOP SCAM
How it works: You're taken to "exclusive gem shop" by:

• Taxi driver (see Scam #1)
• Tuk-tuk driver (see Scam #2)
• "Friendly local" you met
• Salesman tells you:
• "Special tax-free day, once per year!"
• "Buy gems here, sell in your country, and make profit!"
• "I have a friend in [your country], he'll buy them"
• Shows "certificates of authenticity"
• Pressures you to buy ฿50,000-200,000 worth
• Why it works:
• Seems like legitimate business opportunity
• "Certificates" look official
• The salesman is very convincing
• You think you'll make money
• The truth:
• Gems are fake or low quality (worth 1% of what you paid)
• "Certificates" are meaningless paper
• The "buyer in your country" doesn't exist
• You can't resell them for anything close to what you paid
• Refunds are impossible
• How to avoid:
• ✅ NEVER go to gem shops, period
• ✅ If someone mentions gems, leave immediately
• ✅ No legitimate business works like this
• ✅ Thailand has no "special tax-free days" for tourists
• If you bought gems:
• Try to return within 24 hours (unlikely to work)
• Contact credit card company for chargeback
• File police report
• Consider it a very expensive lesson
• Real cost:
• ฿50,000-200,000 ($1,450-5,800) completely wasted
• Likelihood:
• 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨 Common in Bangkok, especially near Grand Palace

6️⃣ PING PONG SHOW SCAM
How it works: Street touts in nightlife areas (Pattaya Walking Street, Bangla Road in Phuket, Patpong/Soi Cowboy/Nana in Bangkok):

• "Ping pong show!"
• You go to the bar.
• Watch 5 mins of show
• Bill arrives: ฿15,000 for "drinks"
• Bouncers won't let you leave without paying
• Why it works:
• You want to see something crazy
• You think drinks will be normal bar prices
• Bouncers intimidate you
• The truth:
• Menu doesn't show prices (red flag)
• They'll inflate the bill even more
• Police won't help (they're paid off)
• How to avoid:
• ✅ Skip ping pong shows entirely (not worth it)
• ✅ Stick to legitimate gogo bars with clear pricing
• If it happens:
• Don't fight (they're aggressive)
• Say that you will call the tourist police
• Call the tourist police
• Negotiate down to ฿2,000-3,000
• Pay and leave
• File report with tourist police (unlikely to help)
• Real cost:
• ฿5,000-20,000 ($145-580) for 10 minutes of traumatizing views
• Likelihood:
• 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨 Very common in Red Light Districts
• 💡 TIM'S TIP:Avoid these shows. If someone says "ping pong show," say no and walk away.

7️⃣ CLOSED ROAD / PROTEST SCAM
How it works:You're in taxi/tuk-tuk. Driver says:

• "Road closed ahead! Protest!"
• "I take you different way, see Buddha factory"
• Detours to shops (commission scam again)
• The truth:
• The road is NOT closed
• It's the tuk-tuk commission scam again, with a different excuse
• How to avoid:
• ✅ Check Google Maps—is the road actually closed?
• ✅ Say "I'll walk from here" and exit
• ✅ Use Bolt/Grab (tracked GPS, less scam-prone)
• Real cost:
• Time wasted + commission shop pressure
• Likelihood:
• 🚨🚨🚨 Common

8️⃣ BIRD SEED SCAM
How it works: Friendly person at temple/shrine hands you bird seed:

• "Feed the birds! Good luck!"
• You feed birds
• They demand ฿500 for the seeds
• Why it works:
• You thought it was free/gesture of kindness
• You're embarrassed
• They're aggressive
• How to avoid:
• ✅ Don't accept ANYTHING handed to you by strangers
• ✅ If someone offers something, ask "How much?" first
• ✅ Say "No thank you" and walk away
• If it happens:
• Give back the seeds
• Walk away
• They'll yell but won't chase
• Real cost:
• ฿200-500 ($6-15)
• Likelihood:
• 🚨🚨🚨 Common at temples

9️⃣ OVERPRICED TOUR PACKAGES
How it works:

• Hotel/guesthouse offers tours:
• Prices 2-3x what you'd pay online
• Quality is often lower
• No flexibility
• Why it works:
• Convenience
• You trust your hotel
• You don't know fair prices
• How to avoid:
  ✅ Research prices online first (Klook, GetYourGuide, Viator)
  ✅ Book online directly
  ✅ If booking through hotel, negotiate
• Examples of fair prices (2025):
• Phi Phi Islands tour: ฿1,200-1,800 ($35-53)
• Cooking class: ฿800-1,500 ($24-44)
• Elephant sanctuary: ฿2,000-3,000 ($59-88)
• If hotel quotes 2x these prices:
• Book online instead
• Real cost:
• Overpay 50-100%
• Likelihood:
• 🚨🚨🚨 Common

🔟 FAKE MONK SCAM
How it works: Person dressed as monk:

• Hands you bracelet or amulet
• "For blessing, good luck"
• Demands donation (฿500+)
• The truth:
• Real monks don't approach tourists for money
• Real monks don't demand specific amounts
• This is someone in a costume
• How to avoid:
  ✅ Politely decline anything handed to you
  ✅ Real monks receive donations at temples, not on streets
  ✅ If you want to donate, do it at actual temples
• Real cost:
• ฿200-1,000 ($6-29)
• Likelihood:
• 🚨🚨🚨 Common in tourist areas

1️⃣1️⃣ FRIENDSHIP BRACELET SCAM
How it works: Someone ties bracelet on your wrist:

• "Gift! Welcome to Thailand!"
• Once tied, demands ฿500
• Why it works:
  • They tie it quickly, hard to refuse
  • You feel obligated
  • They're persistent
• How to avoid:
  ✅ Keep hands in pockets near touts
  ✅ Firmly say "No" and pull hand away
  ✅ Walk away quickly
• If it happens:
• Cut off bracelet and leave
• Don't pay
• Real cost:
• ฿200-500 ($6-15)
• Likelihood:
• 🚨🚨 Less common now

1️⃣2️⃣ TAXI LONG ROUTE SCAM
How it works: Taxi driver takes unnecessarily long route to run up meter.

• Why it works:
  • You don't know the correct route
  • Meter is technically "working"
  • Hard to prove
• How to avoid:
  ✅ Follow route on Google Maps
  ✅ If driver deviates significantly, call it out
  ✅ Use Bolt/Grab (route is pre-set)
• If it happens:
  • Note where deviation started
  • Only pay what Google Maps says it should cost
  • Report driver
• Real cost:
• Overpay ฿100-300 ($3-9)
• Likelihood:
• 🚨🚨🚨 Common with tourist-looking passengers

1️⃣3️⃣ CLUB ENTRY SCAM
How it works: Promoter on street:

• "Free entry! Free drinks!"
• Inside: ฿1,000 mandatory drink minimum
• Or: cover charge not mentioned
• How to avoid:
  ✅ Ask about ALL costs upfront
  ✅ If "free" - ask what the catch is
  ✅ Stick to well-known clubs
• Real cost:
• ฿500-2,000 ($15-59) unexpected
• Likelihood:
• 🚨🚨🚨 Common in nightlife areas

1️⃣4️⃣ MASSAGE UPSELL SCAM
How it works: You book Thai massage:

• Sign says ฿250/hour
• During massage, they offer "oil massage" (฿500 more)
• Or claim "tip not included" (฿500)
• Bill is ฿750+ instead of ฿250
• Why it works:
• You're relaxed mid-massage
• You don't want confrontation
• They pressure you
• How to avoid:
  ✅ Confirm TOTAL price before starting
  ✅ Say "Just traditional Thai massage, ฿250 total, correct?"
  ✅ If they upsell during, say "No thanks, just continue with original"
  ✅ Tip is optional (10% is nice, not required)
• Fair massage prices:
• Thai massage: ฿200-350/hr
• Oil massage: ฿350-500/hr
• Foot massage: ฿250-400/hr
• Tip: ฿50-100 if good (optional)
• Real cost:
• Overpay ฿300-500 ($9-15)
• Likelihood:
• 🚨🚨🚨 Common at touristy massage shops

1️⃣5️⃣ CREDIT CARD SKIMMING
How it works: Restaurant/shop runs your card:

• They copy card details
• Use them for fraudulent charges later
• You don't notice until checking statement
• Why it works:
• Invisible (happens in back room)
• You trusted the establishment
• Difficult to prove
• How to avoid:
  ✅ Use cash for small purchases
  ✅ Never let card leave your sight
  ✅ Use credit (not debit) - better fraud protection
  ✅ Check statements daily while traveling
  ✅ Use mobile payment (Apple Pay/Google Pay) when possible
• If it happens:
• Call credit card company immediately
• Freeze card
• Dispute charges
• File police report
• Real cost:
• Varies ($100-1,000+) but usually covered by card company
• Likelihood:
• 🚨🚨 Rare but happens

• Share room number with strangers
• Flash expensive jewelry/watches
• Leave bags unattended
• Walk alone late at night in sketchy areas
