Brief History
From 1916 to 1995, Thai football revolved around the Kor Royal Cup era — a Bangkok-centric knockout tournament. In 1996 the modern league was born with 18 clubs, and Bangkok Bank was crowned inaugural champions. In 2007 the league expanded nationwide, integrating provincial teams. Today 16 clubs play home-and-away from August to May.
