Learn how to ride Pattaya's baht buses like a local: new fares (15–20 THB), the Central Loop, key routes to Jomtien and Naklua, and unwritten rules.

### **Baht Buses (Songthaews)**

Blue pickup trucks, two benches in the back, ceiling rail. in Thai: songthaews (two rows).

The price went up this year for the first time in over 30 years. Old fare was 10 baht. New fare is 15 baht for short rides up to 10 kilometers, and 20 baht for longer routes — typically Pattaya to Jomtien or Pattaya to Naklua. Drivers don't always have change for a 20 baht note on a 15 baht ride.

How to ride: stand on the side of the road and flag one down. The driver stop next to you. Climb in the back. Sit. When you want out, press the buzzer mounted on the ceiling rail. Walk to the left window, hand driver money, and walk away. No talking, no negotiation.

Tip: never take a baht bus that waits for customers. the driver waits to fill the vehicle before he starts. time wasted. always flag one down. Rule exception: The baht buses to Jomtien always wait to fill the vehicle.

### **Baht Bus Routes**

There are roughly eight routes operating around the city, but three matter for almost everyone:

**The Central Loop (Beach Road and Second Road).** Anti-clockwise one-way system. south on Beach Road, left turn before Walking Street, left onto Second Road and north. At Dolphin Roundabout it turns left onto Beach Road. This is the one you'll use to get from Soi 6 to Walking Street and back. 15 baht.

**Pattaya to Jomtien.** Catch this one at the dedicated stop on Second Road, just south of the Second Road and South Pattaya Road junction. 20 baht.

**Pattaya to Naklua.** Second Road bus heading north. At Dolphin Roundabout, watch what the driver does. If he turns left onto Beach Road or right onto North Pattaya Road, get off and wait for the next one. The Naklua bus continues straight north up Naklua Road. 20 baht.

Critical thing: Beach Road and Second Road are both one-way streets going opposite directions, you often need to walk one block over to catch the bus going the way you want.
